Clint Jun Gamboa – “Superstitious” – tempo seems too slow – and I have a feeling this landed more live than it does on TV. He’s got a great voice, but his personality is a little geeky.
Jovanny Barreto – “I’ll be Your Crying Shoulder” - Sleepy… a good vocal, but that song did nothing for me.
Jordan Dorsey – “OMG” – It was like watching Kobe Bryant in a Celtics uniform. Just doesn’t make sense. He needs to wear the right uniform.
Tim Halperin – “Come On Over” – a little pitchy… it’s probably a cool pick, but it didn’t wow – started looking at my dog.
Brett Loewenstern – “Light My Fire” – If people stayed interested through his whole song, then the risk paid off – but the build took a long time to grow.
James Durbin – “You Got Another Thing Comin” – Gotta be a first for Idol to have Judas Priest. His upper range is so effortless. Must have been what it was like to hear Bon Jovi in the “Runaway” days.
Robbie Rosen – “Angels” – He was much better in Aladdin. Actually, he’s good. He opens up a whole new world, I feel like I’m on a magic carpet ride when he sings… He only has three wishes so he’d better make them last…
Stefano Langone – “Just The Way You Are” – Of the macho slick dudes in the top 24, he’s the most genuine. A little pitchy with the last belting notes, but still, very endearing.
Paul McDonald – “Maggie May” – He looks like what would happen if Mick Jagger had to live inside of Maurice Gibb’s skin. Very funky – definitely fit within his style, so he’s got another week – will need to get more emotionally connected to the material if he’s gonna last.
Casey Abrams – “I put a spell on you” – Seth Rogen stars in the biopic of Tom Waits. He was hot – probably the only one who could actually follow Jacob. Also lost weight.
The camera angle on the judges seems really odd. And even weirder when Ryan is behind them.
Steven Tyler: Holy Shipyards – he’s been waiting for that one.
Is there even one Smith or Johnson in this competition? Seriously typing these names is sending me into fits.
Isn’t it interesting that the entrance of a kinder/gentler judging panel has coincided with a level of confidence and brilliance that defies understanding? But don’t just credit the judges – Nigel has a LOT to do with that.
